Mama Grizzlies Rise

If one phrase from the 2010 elections sticks in the political lexicon, it will be "Mama Grizzlies." In a two-minute video released by Sarah Palin's political-action committee on July 8, the former Alaska governor and vice-presidential candidate compared fearless female Republican candidates and voters to mother bears rising up on their haunches to defend their young from the threat of an overreaching, overspending Democrat-controlled Congress. As Palin endorsed Mama Grizzlies across the country, the term's cachet grew — along with Palin's polarizing yet potent brand of identity politics.
