Scientists cut short a test of the drug AZT when spectacular results show the drug can delay the development of symptoms of AIDS for months in some patients. Patients who had received placebos as part of the study are given the drug, originally developed decades earlier as a possible cancer treatment. Still, medical researchers warn, "This is not a cure."
