Anti-Mao Campaign

Week of Jan. 5, 1981
The Chinese government implements an anti-Mao campaign, tearing down statues of the former leader of China's Cultural Revolution and instructing citizens to turn in their Mao badges. The attack on Mao coincides with the trial of his widow, Jiang Qing, charged with inciting the persecution of several well-known writers and a government official.
