Reports surface that the My Lai massacre of March 1968 was carried out by 60 to 70 U.S. soldiers who killed some 100 Vietnamese men, women and children in less than 20 horrific minutes. "The incident ranks as the most serious atrocity yet attributed to American troops in a war that is already well known for its particular savagery," writes TIME.
