As President Johnson announces his determination to keep South Vietnam free of communist control, even if it takes "20 or 50 years," U.S. forces intensify their assaults. For the first time, American pilots are authorized to seek out "targets of opportunity, instead of limiting their attacks to targets chosen in Washington."
