"Despite continuing reports that cigarettes are the worst darn things," reports TIME, domestic consumption soars to an all time high of 430 billion cigarettes in 1958. "Most important," the average American age 15 or over smoked 3,575 cigarettes — 66 more than the old record set in 1952.
