Coal Miners

Week of May 10, 1943
Led by labor titan John Lewis, U.S. coal miners go on strike, crippling the nation and the war effort that is dependent on coal. Ultimately, the miners go back to work, and, as TIME reports, "John Lewis is the one who gets you more money despite hell, high water, the war and the President of the U.S."
