Rahul (Khan) and tomboy Anjali (Kajol) are students at Xavier College as well as best friends, until transfer student Tina (Mukherjee) arrives to disrupt their relationship. Tina is everything that Anjali is not - beautiful, feminine and sophisticated — and while Anjali is busy realizing her feelings for Rahul, he's developing his own for the new arrival. Inevitably, Anjali professes her love for Rahul, is rejected, and flees the school heartbroken. But this being a Bollywood film, the hits keep coming: Tina and Rahul marry, but Tina dies soon after childbirth. On her eighth birthday, the daughter — whom they name Anjali — and her grandmother devise a plot to reunited Rahul with the woman he once loved. But unbeknownst to them, the older Anjali is preparing to wed another man. It's a classic Bollywood potboiler that soars from one melodramatic climax to the next.
