13. VIP for a Day

Membership in the airlines' premium-flyer clubs — which gives you access to plushy airport lounges, complete with complimentary wi-fi, snacks and other amenities — typically costs $400 and up per year, not including initiation fees. In the '90s, airlines hit on the idea of offering special one-day memberships for a typical cost of $40 to $55. Pretty pricey, but it beats enduring a four-hour weather delay in the plastic chair at gate B-17.
