In what may be the most epic image makeover in history, mousy Norma Jeane Baker changed her name, dyed her hair and transformed herself into a movie star for the ages. Even after a career that included dozens of films and worldwide fame, however, she may have been less successful at healing the wounds left by a childhood spent mostly in foster homes and orphanages; her death at age 36 from an overdose of barbiturates was ruled a probable suicide.
