Alan Gilbert's inaugural season as music director of the New York Philharmonic began on a high note he conducted soprano Renée Fleming in Messiaen's "Poèmes Pour Mi" to great acclaim at the opening night gala and it ends with a solemn mass. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis is paired with a new work by composer in residence Magnus Lindberg. It may not be the most anticipated concert of the orchestra's season, but it caps the first year of its hometown conductor: Gilbert, whose parents are current and former NY Philharmonic violinists, is the first New Yorker to hold the post.
