Mickey Mantle

In 1961, Mickey Mantle hit 54 home runs for the New York Yankees. His teammate Roger Maris hit seven more. In the end, it was Maris, not Mantle, who surpassed the record previously held by Babe Ruth. Despite his second-place finish, though, Mantle remains second-to-none for many fans. Legends do not depend on statistics alone. Besides, Mantle still holds the record for World Series homers (18).
