Keeping dog-show champions groomed can be expensive, but giving them a trim behind their owners' backs can be much more so. A British veterinarian discovered this after he cut the bangs of a prizewinning long-haired Skye terrier in an attempt to liberate the dog's vision, hindered as it was by inches of judge-pleasing, signature golden hair. The owner, Sue McCourt, a veteran breeder, did not take the surprise well upon returning to pick up her pup. "I felt like he had been attacked," she said. Left with an unshowable dog on her hands, she took the vet to court, and in June 2000 the practice settled with her for an undisclosed four-figure sum.
