"America's First Dot-Com City"

Swept into the craze of the dotcom bubble just before it burst, the town of Halfway, Ore. — which is nowhere near the middle of the state — proclaimed itself "Half.com" for a year in 2000. The community of 350 received computers and tens of thousands of dollars from the Internet company, which was bought by eBay not long after. In 2007, Halfway’s council put one of two signs welcoming people to “America’s First Dot-Com City” in a museum. The other one? The council auctioned it off ... on eBay.
