It was the battle of the Brians at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. After gold-medalist Scott Hamilton retired following the 1984 Games, Canadian Brian Orser and American Brian Boitano were neck and neck for the top spot in men's figure skating. Orser was in first place after the short program, but a slip during a triple-flip in the long program cost him the gold by one-tenth of a mark by one judge. Subsequent to the Games, both Brians turned professional, and Orser coached South Korean gold-medal winner Yu Na Kim in this year's women's match.
