Six-time US figure skating champion Todd Eldredge had more artistry, but Timothy Goebel, with his athletic jumps, was dubbed the "Quad King." In the 2002 national championships, the two were tied heading into the long program. Eldredge, who at the ripe old age of 30 had come back after a 2-year break from select competitions, beat out Goebel, the 2001 champ. Both made the US Olympic team, but it was the 21-year-old Goebel (the first man to land three quadruple jumps in a single performance) who medaled later that year in Salt Lake City, Utah, receiving the bronze.
