September 2005
Powell's Mea Culpa

"It's a blot. I'm the one who presented it on behalf of the United States to the world, and (it) will always be a part of my record. It was painful. It's painful now."

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, in an interview with Barbara Walters

During an interview with Barbara Walters of ABC News, former Secretary of State Colin Powell expresses contrition over his role in selling the Iraq war to the United Nations. In February of 2003, Powell gave a dramatic address to the U.N. Security Council in which he presented evidence of Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction programs — evidence that was subsequently called into question. Powell left the administration shortly after Bush's reelection in November of 2004.
