Assessing this performance is a bit tricky. On the one hand, the King of Pop deserves an over-the-top, emotional send-off at the recording industry's most prestigious awards show. On the other hand, it's hard to beat last July's memorial service. Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Carrie Underwood and Celine Dion do a respectful job, making sure not to upstage Michael Jackson's original vocals on "Earth Song." It's nice to see him remembered for something other than the moonwalk. And bringing Jackson's children Prince and Paris onstage to receive his lifetime-achievement award is touching, but I keep worrying that they are being exploited.
Oh, and I didn't have 3-D glasses on. Was I supposed to have 3-D glasses? Where was I supposed to get them? What the heck, CBS?
