The Japanese have sumo, and the Afghans have polo played with the carcass of a goat or calf, but few countries are as attached to their national sport as the Bhutanese are to archery. Tourists can sling their bows at any archery grounds across the country, although the chances of actually hitting the target are as minuscule as the bull's-eye itself. The Bhutanese target is just 11 in. across, compared with 40 in. for a regulation Olympic target, and competitors in the Himalayan kingdom must stand twice as far away. As if that's not tough enough, spectators try to break the archer's concentration by lobbing colorful insults their way. Oh, and the target is usually festooned with images of erect penises. How's that for distracting?
