With Noel Gallagher on guitar and his younger brother Liam on vocals, Oasis rose to become one of the biggest British bands since the Beatles. Despite their commercial success, sibling rivalry got the better of them: they rarely spoke, refused to travel together and saw each other only onstage. On Aug. 28, their fractious relationship reached a boiling point when Liam reportedly smashed Noel's guitar backstage at a gig in Paris. The concert was canceled, and Noel quit the group. "I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer," he told reporters. "The level of verbal and violent intimidation toward me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable." Liam responded by saying he didn't like his brother either. Even so, their longtime manager believes the pair will make peace within five years and stage a reunion tour. To make that happen, he should probably remind them of their second No. 1 single, "Don't Look Back in Anger."
