Ordinarily, I'd say it's too soon for a revival of a 1998 musical that ran for a respectable two years on Broadway. But this great show, based on E.L. Doctorow's panoramic novel, was underappreciated from the get-go, and if it takes a solid, well-sung, scaled-down revival to remind people of that, so be it. Terrence McNally's book is one of the best novel-to-musical transformations I've seen, and the Stephen Flaherty-Lynn Ahrens score reinvigorates the ragtime idiom even more skillfully than Marvin Hamlisch did in The Sting.
