Fuzzy Zoeller vs. Greg Norman (1984)
On the final hole of the '84 Open at the Winged Foot Golf Club outside New York City, Norman, tied for the lead with Zoeller, hit his second shot into the grandstand. He got a free drop into the deep rough but shanked his chip across the green and onto the fringe, some 40 feet from the cup. The Great White Shark looked cooked. However, Norman sank the long putt to save par. Zoeller, watching from the 18th fairway, waved a white towel to signal surrender: he thought Norman had birdied the hole, which would have won Norman the championship. Zoeller dropped the towel and parred the hole, and destroyed Norman by eight strokes in the playoff. While walking onto the 18th green, Norman waved the towel at Fuzzy. "I'm not a great player," said Zoeller after winning his second major. "But I'm a damn good one."
