For his last TV series, King of the Hill, Mike Judge peered into the heart of Bush country, looking at the family of Texan propane salesman Hank Hill, who liked his meat red and his beer in cans. In his first series of the Obama era, Judge (Office Space, Beavis and Butt-Head) turns his satiric eye to the p.c. household of Gerald and Helen Goode, who prefer their produce organic and their drinks fair-trade. Their household includes Ubuntu, their adopted African son (who to the Goodes' surprise turned out to be South African and white), rebellious daughter Bliss and the family dog Che, whose enforced vegan diet leads him to turn on the neighborhood squirrels. Judge always aims to draw a warts-and-all picture of American life — his movie Idiocracy imagined a future America with a populace of morons and a wrestler President — and here the statement is about the trouble with trying to be good, in a world when every step seems to add to your carbon footprint.
