Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers

Having started in every game from September 1992 to January 2008, Brett Favre, 39, was as integral a part of the Packers' scrappy successes as the sub-zero temperatures in Wisconsin's Lambeau Field. So when the three-time MVP quarterback announced his retirement in March, openly weeping at a press conference, Packer fans wept with him. By summer, though, the indecisive Favre said that he was "guilty of retiring early." His old team, meanwhile, hinted that he could only return as the No. 2 quarterback, a prospect that led Favre to ask to be released so he could play for another team. In August the Packers ended the soap opera by trading Favre to the Jets, where he took New York to first place in the NFC East. Just weeks into the season, though, the questions started again — would Favre stay or would he go?
