Clinton's RFK Tribute

May 22, 2008

"We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California."

Hillary Clinton, amid calls for her to concede defeat, citing the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy as evidence that this year's lengthy Democratic nominating process is not unprecedented.

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann blasted her remark as insensitive, saying she "invoked the nightmare of political assassination." Clinton later apologized, though she and her defenders stressed that she never meant to suggest, as some accused her of doing, that she should stay in the race because something terrible could happen to her opponent, as many were fearing at the time.
