Earthsea: The Farthest Shore (1972) / Earthsea: Tehanu (1990)

Ursula K. LeGuin's long-running fantasy series, set in the sprawling archipelago world of Earthsea, has spilled across novels and short stories and spanned decades. It's a series full of magic and dragons and wizards, palatable to adults and children alike. It was 18 years between the end of the trilogy and the fourth volume, which took a darker, more mature tone.
