Washington

It almost doesn't matter who's playing at the Gorge Ampitheatre. The outdoor concert venue, which overlooks the Columbia River and the surrounding hills in George, Wash., is a place of such rugged beauty that your enjoyment may be driven as much by the scenery as the sounds. (Of course if the band is really cool, bonus.) There are proper seats, but most of the 20,000 in attendance prefer to recline on a grassy hill that surveys the stage. The Gorge fits perfectly with the outdoor lifestyle of state residents, and any East Coasters who are used to watching bands inside soulless domes should give it a look.
754 Silica Rd. NW, George.
