Despite her denials of any knowledge of the alleged events, it was on Rebekah Brooks' watch as editor of the News of the World that the voice mail from murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler's cell phone was allegedly intercepted and tampered with (an incident that gave Dowler's family false hope that she may have still been alive). After mounting pressure, Brooks resigned on July 15, 2011, and was arrested two days later on phone-hacking and corruption allegations (she was later released on bail).
