Born in New York City in 1871, Feininger immigrated to Germany at 16 and remained there until the Nazis made it impossible to stay. His knife-edged take on Cubism, combined with his fundamentally romantic nature, produced pictures that were brittle and dreamy at the same time. 6/3010/16
