Duke University president Terry Sanford approaches alumnus Richard Nixon about constructing a presidential library. But Duke professors, on both sides of the issue, "outdid themselves with historical allusions," wrote TIME. Nevertheless, Duke's trustees vote 9 to 2 to proceed with negotiations. [The library is finally built in Palo Alto, Calif. without Duke's help.]
