So Robert De Niro sure likes playing gangsters, doesn't he? Here he is again in Brian De Palma's The Untouchables as Al Capone, one of history's greatest crime lords. While the movie is ostensibly about Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) and his gang of Chicago cops, De Niro easily steals every scene he's in, playing Capone as a barrel-chested roughneck who tries to pass himself off as upper-class. Opera, fancy hotels, the finest cigars all the trappings of wealth fall away when things go wrong. Then De Niro shows Capone for what he really is: a hotheaded crook.
