Coming off the deception of the Nixon years, a political premium was placed on honesty and transparency for the presidential candidates of 1976. But in the closing days of the election, the then-former governor of Georgia may have gone just a bit too far. Jimmy Carter sat down with Hugh Hefner's Playboy magazine, and said, "I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times." While he went on to assure the soft-porn magazine that the higher being forgave him for it, the remarks set off a media frenzy. Carter held on to defeat Gerald Ford in that election, and has remained married to his wife Rosalyn to this day.
