GM hires Joel Ewanick away from Nissan's North American unit to head its marketing and advertising effort, which has been generally marked by mediocrity since the mid-1990s. Ewanick had been specifically recruited by Nissan after successfully raising the profile of competitor Hyundai with clever campaigns such as offering to make the car payments for any customer who lost their job. But Ewanick is the fourth executive in six months to hold the GM marketing job, which has become a major hot seat as the automaker searches for a new more distinct voice, and its board of directors demands better results.
