But by the early 1950s, he wasn't in the greatest of health after enduring a near fatal car accident in 1949. During the 59 days he spent recovering in the hospital, Hogan's doctors said he might never walk again, let alone play golf. But recover he did and, competing for the first time at the Open, the Hawk won by four shots.
