It has been three years since the last installment in the increasingly inappropriately titled Final Fantasy video-game series, and all eyes have been on designers Square Enix as their latest follow-up, Final Fantasy XIII, approaches its Japanese release later this year. But after Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, had finished presenting the game at the Sony tent, there was another surprise: a trailer for the PlayStation-exclusive Final Fantasy XIV that left the audience double-checking their roman numerals. Showcasing the inevitable sequel before the release of its predecessor is an uncommon move, but it might simply be Square Enix demonstrating another uncommon move at press conferences: blunt honesty.
