Zafon is a practitioner of the literary thriller, a term which seems to indicate a novel that is well-written but also has actual guns and chase scenes in it. Zafon's books have the added twist that they're about books themselves: his first big hit, The Shadow of the Wind, revolved around a legendary Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a catacomb that stored all the lost volumes of the world. The Cemetery also figures in The Angel's Game, which is set in Barcelona in the 1920s and stars Daniel Martin, a hack author of crime fiction with girl trouble and dreams of writing something better.
