After Palestinian militants massacred Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics the previous September, Israel's 1973 Eurovision entrant, Ilanit, sang her submission "Somewhere" while wearing a bulletproof vest. Host nation Luxembourg had canceled leave for all security personnel; laconic British commentator Terry Wogan noted that the audience was strongly advised to remain seated while applauding the performances, otherwise they risked being shot by security. Happily, there were no untoward incidents, and Israel, in its Eurovision debut, placed a credible fourth.
