The telecommunications company spent billions laying fiber-optic cables to carry the world's surging Internet traffic, but Global Crossing found itself stretched too thin when the dotcom bubble burst. After it emerged from bankruptcy in late 2003, top executives were ordered to return $325 million to investors as a result of a class-action lawsuit. Executives were also investigated by Congress; although none were charged, three were fined $100,000 by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
