PRO: Warrior who commanded operations in both Iraq wars that have become case studies in effective battlefield tactics and anti-insurgency strategy. His book on how the Vietnam War was lost, Dereliction of Duty, encouraged a phalanx of retired generals to step forward last year and call for the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. McMaster has most recently been advising General David Petraeus on how to tackle the insurgency in Iraq.
