Republican: John Sununu (Incumbent)
Democrat: Jeanne Shaheen (Former Governor)
Back during the 2002 Republican midterm gains, John Sununu defeated Jeanne Shaheen in this closely contested northeastern state. Now, Sununu's chances have declined with the changing political climate. Despite New Hampshire's well-known fondness for John McCain, the state has otherwise been trending against the Republicans, and Sununu's popularity has declined as he has been unable to separate himself from President Bush. Shaheen, the only female governor in New Hampshire's history, has held a consistent lead for several months now. Sununu is counting on a combination of incumbency and John McCain's coattails to help lead to victory, while Shaheen hopes that New Hampshire voters will respond to her call for change.
