Ramiele Malubay
Against All Odds
Somewhere in his tax-free castle, Phil Collins would probably admit that this ballad marks the precise qualitative median of 1980s soundtrack tunes—halfway between Don't You (Forget About Me) and Kokomo. But Ramiele sells it like she's never heard words more profound—and I'm buying! She's got just enough brass in her voice to make her unpredictable, and even though she never reaches for the one killer note that Simon and the judges keep waiting for, Ramiele does a whole lot with some pretty dull source material.
