I'm not sure if anyone's ever covered this Leonard Cohen song on Idol before, but considering the Jeff Buckley cover made it the go-to emotional-climax song for approximately 1,000 episodes of The O.C., it's an obvious pick. His moving delivery wins over the judges. He also ditches the guitar, allowing him to show a little range by, for once, not looking like a dorm R.A. doing a free show in the freshman study lounge.
