Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, on the collapse of lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. While the takeover could result in a taxpayer bailout during reorganization, neither company up to that point had been taxpayer funded. Some commentators criticized Palin for her lack of knowledge; others wondered if her comment implied that she opposed the Bush administration's bail-out. A McCain spokesman later said she supports President Bush's plan.
