Lovefoxxx desperately wants to bring the sun out for the drenched Glastonbury crowd. It's mid-afternoon, and the lead singer of disco-rockers Cansei De Ser Sexy (CSS) from San Paulo is pleading from the Other Stage, "It's not going to rain. It's not!" But it already is and has been all day.
The crowd isn't bothered, though. CSS's infectious, synth-hooks and mad energy make dancing in this giant brown puddle feel almost glamorous. The five women and one man who are Cansei De Ser Sexy, or "I'm Tired of Being Sexy" in Portuguese, take their name from an alleged overheard comment by singer Beyonce.
Lovefoxxx, in a multi-colored spangly lycra cat suit, is a mesmerizing performer, having to be pulled twice from the crowd by security as CSS rattle through tracks like "Meeting Paris Hilton," which has the crowd calling back the chorus, "The bitch said yeah." By this time, Lovefoxxx has pulled off her cat suit to reveal a yellow one underneath. L7's grunge anthem "Pretend That We're Dead" is reworked in synth style before Lovefoxx takes a mouthful of helium from one of the balloons bobbing around the stage and squeaks, "This is our last song, take care Glastonbury," going out on recent U.K. single, "Let's Make Love (and Listen to Death From Above)." CSS is gone and the crowd is left to its muddy puddle.
