If an alienated kid thinks he's from Mars, you can be sure that the film about him will be from Venus — an ethereal love story that brings a lonely 6-year-old (Bobby Coleman) into the orbit of a needy novelist (John Cusack, in a possibly record-breaking fourth consecutive role as a grieving widower). The frail premise drowns in a tub of bathos.
