THE OFFENSE: "Here is a woman and I care about Brooke Shields because she is an incredibly talented woman where has her career gone?...These drugs are dangerous."
Actor Tom Cruise publicly criticized actress Brooke Shields' use of anti-depressants to battle her post-partom depression in June 2005. Later, Cruise appeared on NBC's Today show to tout his new movie, War of the Worlds and ended up in a heated discussion with anchor Matt Lauer about the comments. Calling him "glib," Cruise said Lauer didn't know what he was talking about and that he should learn the history of psychiatry. In the ensuing brouhaha, Paramount studios and the actor parted ways after a relatively weak opening for his Mission Impossible 3 and after Paramount's uberlord Sumner Redstone said that Cruise "effectuates creative suicide and costs the company revenue." After his own daughter Suri was born, Cruise showed up at Shields' house to personally apologize. But, according to Cruise's spokesperson, "he has not changed his position about antidepressants, which, as evidenced by the black label warnings issued by the FDA on these types of drugs, are unhealthy."
THE APOLOGY: "He came over to my house, and he gave me a heartfelt apology," Shields told Jay Leno. "And he apologized for bringing me into the whole thing and for everything that happened."
