Pick up a t shirt or a snow globe at a souvenir stand and you won't be the first to give a gift that will collect dust. But for a truly tasty idea, and one that won't take up much luggage space, bag some spices. Why buy condiments in a faraway land when you can grab a jar at your local supermarket? Well, according to Hong Kong-based spice trader Jerome Stewart, supermarket seasonings usually contain preservatives and other odorous chemicals. And, he notes, the multihued heaps at native markets are cheaper—by up to 80%.

Two of the best countries for spice hunting were once key destinations along the Silk Road, the ancient spice-and-textile-trade route. India is a traditional source for many flavorings, so it comes as no surprise that most cities there have vibrant spice markets. New Delhi's Gadodial Market, the largest in Asia, is a handy place to pick up the most expensive spice of them all, saffron, as well as aniseed and turmeric.

At the Western end of the Silk Road is Turkey. Its main port, Istanbul, has the Egyptian Market, reputed for its peppers, from mild paprika to fiery red—perfect for bringing a tear to the eyes of those who've missed you. Close quote
