Indigenous women collect water from Lake Ipatse the morning after the first day of the Kuarup festival of the dead at the Kuikuro village, in the Amazon High Xingu park, Brazil. The Kuarup, a two-day ritual to mourn and celebrate the lives of dead heroes, was performed in honor of prominent Brazilian anthropologist Apoena Meireles. Meireles, former head of the Federal Indian Bureau, was the first to contact the Cinta Larga Indians in the late 1960s
