Time Off
After finishing high school William spent a year traveling in Belize, Chile and Kenya, among other places. In this photograph, taken on December 7, 2000 in Tortel, Chile, the 18-year-old prince crosses a bridge on his way to repair walkways as a volunteer with the Raleigh International Expedition. The U.K.-based charity works with volunteers to help improve conditions for communities throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America. An interpreter who traveled to Chile with Prince William's 141-personexpedition team was forced to leave Patagonia after organizers learned that she also worked as a journalist. Officials from St. James's Palace worried that she might compromise the prince's privacy.
