Much of the work the shuttle fleet did in the last 13 of the program's 30 years involved building the International Space Station (ISS). Carried aloft one component at a time, the ISS soon grew to dwarf the shuttles. Here, one end of the station can be seen through the window of Discovery as it uncoupled and pulled away at the end of an October 2000 mission.
